Tethering though sounds like a very technical term but it is a very simple term used in the use of mobile technology. Tethering is basically using a mobile device to gain Internet Access for another device.
The funda behind it is very simple. Tethering works by connecting a device that can access the Internet to another device, which cannot and this is done either by Bluetooth wireless technology or through cables (USB), allowing the device with built in access to connect through the Internet, using the tethered device as a modem.
Tethering has been used since mobile network providers started providing Internet service to its users. Nowadays this has mainly increased because of portable laptops, as everyone wants Internet on the run. Initially this all happened through USB Cables, but now since most cell phones are equipped with Bluetooth wireless technology, this medium is the most prevalent now.
iPhone is one the most modern gadgets to hit the market, and has been ruling the phone markets since long. iPhone 3G a revolutionary device and who would not want to access the internet with 3G speed.
For tethering your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS , you need to make sure that your iPhone and your wireless carrier meet the minimum system requirements. The minimal requirements are –
* iPhone OS 3.0 needs to be installed on your iPhone 3G or 3GS, since the original iPhone doesn’t support Internet tethering.
* Make sure that your service provider can provide you Internet service on your number.
* And last, is that you will be needing proper network coverage so that you get a good healthy connection and do not blame your wireless provider.
For Internet tethering using a USB port you need:
+ A Mac OS X computer running Mac OS X 10.5.7 or later or a computer running Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later or Windows Vista, and a USB 2.0 port.
+ iTunes 8.2 or later downloaded and installed on your computer.
Note: if you downloaded iTunes 8.2 using a web browser, you may still need to install it. See this article if you experience an issue installing iTunes.
+ An Apple iPhone USB cable (included with iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS).
For Internet tethering the iPod using a Bluetooth port you need:
+ A computer running Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later (Mac OS X 10.5.7 recommended) with Bluetooth 2.0
or a computer running Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later or Windows Vista with Bluetooth 2.0.
+ You will need to turn on Bluetooth on your iPhone and your computer and pair it with your computer.
So of you are have all these then the process is quite simple. Though there are some changes that you need to make on your iPhone which are –
All you need to do on your iPhone is –
Tap Settings > General > Network> Internet Tethering. This is to confirm that your carrier supports Internet tethering. If you don’t see this option, and your carrier supports Internet tethering, connect iPhone to iTunes to install a carrier settings update in iTunes. The iPhone need to be equipped with the latest software to handle Internet tethering.
When you have set your iPhone to be discovered, it will automatically get discovered in your Network Settings as “Apple Mobile Device Ethernet” and you can enable that and access the Internet wirelessly.
