If you ask me, the main reason to jailbreak the iPhone, the ability to use SSH to transfer files between iPhone and computer via WiFi is my answer. I think it’s also one of the reasons why some of you go after jailbreak. But as I know, not all readers are geeks and technical knowledge. You can not even heard of SSH until you decide to jailbreak. So here’s a brief guide to show you how you can use SSH on your iPhone and use it to transfer files to your computer (Mac / Windows). The guide is intended for non-technical person. I just want to show you how SSH is a great pairing with the iPhone to transfer files wirelessly. Then you can use it to download ringtones and images without USB cable.

 

 

SSH (Secure Shell) is a protocol that provides access to the remote server. SSH is typically used to transfer files from one device to another. You can use SSH on jailbroken iPhone, if you have your iPhone and install OpenSSH application. This program allows you to transfer files over a wireless network on your computer and your iPhone. OpenSSH is a program that works behind the iPhone, and you cannot see the icon for that application. Using the OpenSSH development is finished with the computer.

 

How to download and Install SSH on your Computer:

 

Download and install SSH on your computer. WinSCP is a free Windows SSH application. Mac comes pre-installed SSH. Find the IP address of your iPhone. Click Settings on your iPhone to your desktop. Then click on the WiFi, click on the blue arrow on the Wi-Fi Connection, and enter the IP address. Start the SSH client on your computer and enter the IP address of your iPhone. Enter your username and password in the SSH client. Enter the name to use is the root and password alpine. Be sure to use all lowercase for username and password.
